Professional Golf is Coming to West Vancouver

For Immediate Release: Professional Golf is coming to West Vancouver

The District of West Vancouver, Golf West Vancouver and the Vancouver Golf Tour (VGT) are pleased to announce that Professional Golf is coming to Gleneagles Golf Course, May 16, 2012.

“We are very pleased to be hosting the first ever VGT Golf West Vancouver shoot-out at Gleneagles Golf Course. This will be a great opportunity for the residents of our community to come out and see some of the Lower Mainland’s best Professional Golfers,” stated Dan Henegar, manager of parks arboriculture and horticulture for the District of West Vancouver.

The 10-player format for the event includes seven Golf Professionals (selected by their rankings on the VGT), James Presnail, head golf professional at Gleneagles, plus one media qualifier and one open qualifier. All 10 players will tee off on the first hole. The player with the highest score at the end of each hole will be eliminated. If there is a tie for high score on a hole a putt or chip off will determine who moves on and who goes home. Only two players will be left by the 9th hole, which will determine the Champion. The purse for the event is $1,750 with the top three competitors sharing in it.

“Gleneagles is going to provide a very good test for the VGT’s Professionals,” said Fraser Mulholland, commissioner of the Vancouver Golf Tour. “While this is fun format I know the guys will bring their “A” game as they will be competing for the first-place prize of $1,000,” added Mulholland.

Professional Bryn Parry of North Vancouver, BC, and the best player on the VGT over the past three seasons, has been confirmed to play. Parry comes to the event as the defending champion of the 2011 Rogers Canada Cup, an event that earned him $30,000 for the victory. He is also a past Nationwide Tour player and has been the PGA of BC Player of the Year in six of the past seven years.

The day begins on the first hole at 3:30 p.m. with a 45-minute clinic put on by the VGT Professionals. The ten players tee off starting at 4:30pm. The event is open to spectators and is free to attend.

Golf and the Tax Man

Golf and Business
Golf and business go hand in hand. How many people do you know who took up golf because of a company golf tournament or for a great way to entertain clients? Sounds like a great way to spend an afternoon – a little golf, a little business. But not according to Revenue Canada. Golf does not enjoy the same benefits with regards to tax deductions as other sports – say hockey. In the US golf related business expenses are deductible from your bottom line, lowering your company’s tax obligations. Not so in Canada.

The Tax Rules
BDO Canada provides a well written and easy to understand breakdown of meal, golf and golf tournament expenses and what is currently not deductible.

Read the BDO Canada web page here.

The issues has gained momentum lately and many news outlets have printed recent stories. Below is a collection of stories on the topic. We will be following the issue closely and will update this post with further information.

Pesticide Issue Call to Action

BC Pesticide Issue
Inside Golf Magazine has written an article to explain to golfers the pesticide ban issue as it is currently set to effect British Columbia golf courses. As a member of the board of the National Golf Course Owners Association BC Chapter and an operator at three BC golf facilities this issue is very important to understand.

Inside Golf has created a one page summary of the issue. You can read it here. We encourage you to read to the bottom and follow one of the action steps to make your point of view known.

NAGA (National Allied Golf Association) has also written a summary document that you can read here.

Below is an excerpt from the Inside Golf article. You can read the full article here.

From Inside Golf Magazine, December 13, 2011

Dear BC Golf Stakeholder… As you are likely aware, there is a strong possibility that the cosmetic use of pesticides could be banned by the provincial legislature in the coming year. The potential impact on golf courses in the province could prove to be significant…

According to documents released by the Western Canada Turfgrass Association,
-There are diseases and insect activity that, left untreated, could kill turfgrass in as little as 24 hours.
- Without the use of fungicides (which are pesticides) snow mold would kill much of the turfgrass on putting greens, tees, and fairways every winter, leaving the golf course with unplayable conditions and costly repairs. For snow covered courses, turfgrass managers could anticipate, on average, that it would take until mid-June to get back to industry standard playing conditions. For those golf courses in more temperate climates, snow mold has similar potential to do turfgrass damage throughout the whole year if left unchecked.
